Best bug repellent to use when taking a walk?

I live in a rural area. I am not a stranger to black fly and other bug bites. I go for a lot of walks outside and hate using repellents because they are greasy and smelly so I wear pants, long sleeves and a hat but the flies and bugs seem to find their way around that. I don't want to feel like I'm wearing repellent so what is a good one to get to put on my face and arms and even spray on my hat? I would designate that hat for my walks only if I were to spray it. Thanks.
