How much freedom is there involved in working for the RAF within the RAF base?

Thinking about applying because this seems the perfect path for me. I was just wondering whether I'd be let out of the compound, or have stay within the designated grounds. Say if I was stationed in Gibraltar, would I be able to explore the local towns in my own free time, or would I have to apply for leave?
