Is this what the story of the tower of Babel means?

If we take this story as a fable, as I believe the author meant us to, then the tower of Babel represents man-made religion and its use to try to understand nature. God, in this story, is science. Does this mean the author is trying to tell us that following religion is not the route to understanding, and that, in the end, science will destroy religion?
